When are you old enough to go on vacation by yourself.
That first solo trip is tough. All our lives we’re told that strangers are dangerous, the world is a scary place, and we shouldn’t go anywhere alone. People we love tell us that we should go in groups, not alone. Strangers on the street think it’s amazingly brave to even consider taking a trip alone. So how do you know when you’re ready, at any age?
Some people are planning their first vacation alone before they’re old enough to drive. At the extreme lower end, going on vacation alone requires you to be old enough to get around, rent a room or bed, or be allowed on the ship. Most cruise lines require at least one person in each stateroom be 21. Hostels and hotels in the US won’t generally allow minors to stay without someone over 18. Countries with more of a traveling culture may have no problem with under-18s traveling alone.
What about if you’re over 18? Or even over 60? You’re old enough when you think you are. Traveling alone the first time can be scary. There’s no one you know, no one at first to talk to. All the pressure to navigate strange places and locate lodging is on you. In a strange location, that can be difficult. If you think about it the same way you think about doing things at home, though, it gets easier.
Take small steps. Spend a day on your own in the nearest city. Take yourself out to lunch alone, and bring a book if you’re uncomfortable sitting in a restaurant by yourself. Then try a bigger trip. Spend a weekend out of town alone, go on a cruise, or visit an all-inclusive resort. You’ll meet new people and be comfortable traveling in no time, no matter what your age.
